Pretty early on in the project, we latched on to the idea of having cloud shadows cast on the ground in our environment. It would allow for an overcast look, while still allowing for interesting lighting on the cars.
In our first shot, we set up our render so that we could create the cloud shadows in Nuke. It was as simple as rendering our sunlight and the rest of the skydive as separate light groups and combining those with a mask projected onto the scene geometry in Nuke. This allowed for much greater control over the shadow placement to make art direction a lot easier.
